We have had three fantastic days inside the maze of fjords on the southern tip of Greenland. Mountains almost 2000m rising above green narrow fjords.
One of these fjords is the Prince Christian Sound (PCS). PCS connects the westerly entrances with an exit to the east - that is - if there is not too much Ice.
Yesterday afternoon - as we were heading east through PCS another Norwegian sailboat, Coulant, had just been informed by the weather & radio station at the extreme east end of PCS that there was too dense ice to get out into open waters. Hence - we turned west and decided to try to go out via one of the fjords heading south.
This morning we headed dead south from the southern tip of land. Almost immediately we hit dense fog and about 1 hour later we found ourselves in a little more ice than was comfortable. Our second attempt to cross over the ice boundary was therefore aborted and we have now decided to head back to Nanortalik for a good nights sleep.
Tomorrow, August 1, we are going southwest from Nanortalik to 59'10" N before heading dead East and then NorthEast towards Iceland when we cross 42'30"W .
With westerly 15kts winds it is going to be cold. :-)
Today we measured -1,8C in the water.
It was only a short morning swim today.
Fantastisk! God tur til island.
